Watching this again many years after I first saw it, I expected to be disappointed. After all, the great films of our youth sometimes turn out to be something less than we had imagined. But Mister Roberts does not disappoint. This is one of the gems of the American cinema, a poignant comedy featuring a multitudinously clever and delightful script by Frank Nugent and Joshua Logan from a novel by Thomas Heggen made into a play by Logan and Heggen that ran for many years on Broadway. The movie features sterling performances from Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell and Jack Lemmon. Fonda is particularly brilliant in the kind of role from which legends are made. (He also played the part on Broadway.) You can take all your John Wayne classics and toss them overboard with the Captain’s palm tree. Henry Fonda as Lt (j.g.) Doug Roberts, cargo officer of the USS Reluctant, shines forth as the noblest hero of them all. He is a quiet, strong, fair, courageous man in a story sure to mist up your eyes even if you’re watching it for the twentieth time.

Jack Lemmon won a supporting Oscar for his performance as Ensign Pulver, a kind of lazy, but slyly resourceful Walter Mitty type who talks a great game but never follows through… James Cagney is the Captain, a sour, resentful man who mercilessly badgers Mister Roberts and grossly neglects the morale of his crew. He is just perfect. The way he bellows “Mister Roberts!” or way he trembles out the line, “Mister…Mister…this time you’ve gone too far” delights the audience. William Powell, in his last film, plays the ship’s wise and ever diplomatic doc with graceful precision.

Marty (1955) starring Ernest Borgnine, a kind of politically correct (for its time) love story about ordinary folk, won the Academy’s honor for best picture in 1956, the year Mister Roberts was nominated. Henry Fonda, in perhaps his most beloved and certainly one of his finest performances, was not even nominated. Incidentally, Hollywood legend John Ford directed, but fell ill and Mervyn LeRoy–no slouch himself (e.g., The Bad Seed, 1956; No Time for Sergeants, 1958, etc.)–finished up.

There are a number of memorable scenes in the film, the kind recalled with delight. My favorite involves the crew, their binoculars and the nurses. I also loved the careful concocting of the “scotch whiskey” by Doc. The weekly letters requesting a transfer, the Hoot Gibson films we (thankfully) never see, the ever worshipful palm tree, Pulver’s marbles in a tobacco tin that he shakes in Roberts’s face, vowing to prove his manhood by putting them in the captain’s overbin, his “firecracker,” his “If I could be with you/One hour tonight/To do the things I might/I’m telling you true/I’d be anything but blue,” the giddy nurses, and the infamous liberty are other unforgettable bits. But more than anything, what makes this a great movie, are the indelible characters so very true to our experience, and how nicely they meld and contrast.

This is, along with From Here to Eternity, Das Boot, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Caine Mutiny, Stalag 17, and Twelve O’Clock High, among my favorite movies to come out of World War II. What sets Mister Roberts apart is the humor born of the boredom, frustration, and tedium that most truly characterizes life in the service. In this regard I recall a saying that goes something like this: “War is filled with long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of absolute terror.” The crew of the Reluctant got only the boredom.

This excellent war comedy/movie will always be one of my personal favorites. Based on the WWII guideline, the basic premise is a rather anal boat captain trying to make “ship shape” a merchant/transport type ship. (in the Pacific).

From an original play of Broadway, starring Hendy Fonda to the big screen. (My parents saw this Play on Broadway on their honeymoon and I still have the Playbill) So naturally I am biased.

Start with an assembled cast second to none.

Henry Fonda (Wry humor..this movie IS him.)

William Powell (The thin man returns…his sarcasm is perfect here)

James Cagney (Does his talent ever end? One of his best roles)

Lemmon (Ensign Pulver), shows his talent for the site gag and, lets say, driftiness, early. This perfomance spawned a few sequels on Pulver alone.

If you were ever in the Navy, you will see Cagney’s Performance as uncanny, and see a little bit of each actor in your own experience.

This is meant to be seen in its entirety. Its not cut to pieces for TV, and when seen in this format is like a new movie, meant to be seen from start to finish.

Highly recommended, and will be seen again and again

As he did in 1975 with “The Wind and the Lion,” director and writer John Milius mixes history and adventure in his 1997 production of “Rough Riders,” and in both cases the results are enjoyable although over the top at times. Curiously, he focuses on Theodore Roosevelt in both films and creates two of the more interesting interpretations of this famed American. In “Rough Riders,” a young and very energetic Roosevelt is played by Tom Berenger (also co-producer) with both distinction and humor. It is perhaps the definitive TR to date. Note, especially TR’s opening speech at the Naval War College and his retropsective at the end of the fight for “San Juan Hill.” The action scenes are typical Milius, great fun and again at times a bit over the top. The film shifts from overly patriotic to momentary scenes that are clearly critical of American expansionism and jingoism. Milius does make one thing clear, after these events nothing was to be the same. This was a defining moment in American history. Well produced, written and acted, this film could have made it on the big screen rather than television and it should be on DVD! Certainly one of Milius’ best efforts, “Rough Riders” is an enjoyable romp.

John Milius did an absolutely amazing job of putting together a film that depicts the establishment and deployment of the 1st U.S. Vounteer Cavalry. Milius has done wonderful justice to his longtime hero, Theodore Roosevelt, who he once said was the embodiment of everything great about America.

As Americans, we take so much of our heritage for granted. In this day and age of our all-volunteer armed forces, high technology and limited warfare, any discussion of our heritage and sacrifice in the blood our ancestors made is neatly compartmentalized for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. This is a shame.

Sometimes, the people who are supposed to be leading us aren’t much help, either. Our elected and appointed officials often flounder in the face of bad press without explanation. The end result is that no one can understand how our government can ask people to fight and die in places far away, for causes that sometimes seem to have more to do with whether or not we can maintain our standard of living than anything else. The wars we fight now seem to be fleeting events that come and go. Tragically, the dead are gone, and life goes on without them.

In his various career incarnations as Governor of New York, the Secretary of the Navy, and as President, Roosevelt was always one to inspire controversy. As a Lieutenant Colonel assigned to the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, he was no different. To Roosevelt, war was not the drudgery of hell on earth, but an enobling excercise, one which all Americans should aspire to. Amusingly, after one visit with Roosevelt, author Mark Twain remarked that it was easy to see the Roosevelt was “cleary insane.”

Whether you agree or disagree, Tom Berringer is the perfect Roosevelt. He portrays TR as a man of vision and backbone, as the sort of man who would one day forge the United States into the awsome power that it is today. Berringer’s performance in “The Rough Riders” is possibly the best of his career.

In 1898, the American nation was, in many ways, still rebuilding from the civil war. For the people of America, this was the dawn of an industrialized nation, and for the first time, American industry was forging the tools that would take our Naval Forces into the twentieth century. Yet it would be twenty years before the new technology of the tank and airplane would be implemented in land warfare. The Spanish-American war is unique in that in many respects, both politically, strategically and tactically, it was a prelude to World War One.

Without going into a plot synopsis (I’m not going to explain something you can see for yourself), I will say that the story unfolds perfectly and the direction is impeccable. All of the supporting actors, Brad Johnson, R. Lee Ermy, Dale Dye, Brian Keith, Sam Elliott, Gary Busey and George Hamilton are superb in their roles.

Yes – this is a film that should have been a theatrical release. Yes – this is a film that ought to be put on a two-dvd set with lots of extras. Yes – this is a great film.

The “Rough Riders” was made for presentation as a made for TV film for Turner Broadcasting. It was first broadcast in 1998, roughly 100 years after the Spanish American war. I’ll give Ted Turner credit; I don’t agree with him on very much, but I will say that Turner Broadcasting performed a great service in broadcasting “The Rough Riders”.

In a day and age where films depicting shoddy characters with even shoddier values are routinely churned out and targeted for specific demographic groups, “The Rough Riders” is an anomoly. It is an inspired film.

I will not argue about the story, the stars and the production. this is a great all around movie. But it deserved a far better DVD transfer then Fox gave it. They chose to cheap out on a very good soundtrack and pass on a DD 5.1 upgrade, leaving the original (VHS) Dolby 2.0. The film transfer is at times grainy and no better than VHS, in fact we compared it to the tape and found it about the same. The film was transferred to a 2.35 wide screen format. The only “extra” was the original trailer. Fox was certainly after the quick buck on this conversion. We give the film 5 stars for its entertainment value, but 0 for it’s DVD technical merits. I guess that makes it a 3 overall. Michael Douglas/Robert Zemekis how could you let Fox do this to your film.

“Slayers Next” is typically cited as the best season of this fantasy/comedy anime that should serve as a centerpiece to any animation collection. I’ve already gone over the show’s basics on my review of The Slayers – The Complete First Season so I’ll cut to the chase here. While the first season is my favorite, this is in no way an inferior outting for Lina and her band of merry misfits. Many new characters are introduced, all the favorites from season one are back, and the storylines continue to balance comedy reminiscent of the Three Stooges with an epic fantasy universe that seems to live and breathe on it’s own.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Slayers Next – The Complete Second Season! Click Here

This second season expands on that universe and manages to ramp up the tension as Lina Inverse is forced to learn more and more dangerous magics to keep pace with the chaos-worshipping demons that intend to destroy mankind. That’s not to say that our heroine doesn’t find plenty of time to fight over food (one of her passions), pick on bandits and other pathetic would-be villains (it’s a hobby), and destroy a kingdom or two with her Dragon Slave spell. Her primary nemesis for much of this season is Martina, a princess displaced by Lina’s aforementioned destruction who worships a monster named Zomoulgustar. Sound like a name an autistic kid would think up? Welllll….

Martina’s usually poorly though out attempts at revenge provide plenty of comic relief throughout the season, but don’t think that Gourry gets off the hook. He picks up an admirer of his own; a rogue swordsman who wishes to duel with him. But who has the time with all these apocalypses to avert? But the newcomer most beloved by fans is the mysterious priest Xellos; a character fond of dropping hints at crucial plot points and then, when asked for more specific information, declaring “That…..is a secret” with his pointer finger thrust upward for emphasis and then disappearing.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Slayers Next – The Complete Second Season! Click Here

Who the hell is this Xellos guy? Will Martina ever get a life? What manner of beast could possibly challenge the mighty Lina Inverse at this point? Will the jokes about Lina’s small breasts ever cease? All questions will be answered and there will be both dungeons and dragons aplenty for fantasy buffs. “Slayers Next” delivers exactly what fans of the first season would want: more of the same. More characters, more action, more madness, more magic, more slapstick, and best of all more Lina Inverse. If you dug season one, have no fear; this is exactly what you’d hope for in a sophomore season.

Slayers NEXT is the second season to the 1995 TV Anime “The Slayers”. Both seasons are based off novels written by Hajime Kanzaka. This season of Slayers is 26 episodes long, like the first one is. In my opinion, it has the perfect balance of comedy/seriousness, and every episode has memorable moments, even the filler episodes are 5 star quality.

This season introduces Xellos, the trickster priest. A favorite character among many Slayers fans. He has comical charm with his wacky antics, and at the same time a mysterious motive that will keep you wondering what it is he’s really up to.

Watching this kept me wanting more and more, and I didn’t stop watching until I reached the end.

Chances are, if you liked season 1, you will like this too. Maybe even more. I recommend this to anyone who likes the fantasy/comedy genres

Pokemon: Jirachi Wish Maker may have gone direct to video, but that doesn’t mean it’s not as good as previous installments. In fact, in some ways this entry could very well be the best Pokemon movie so far, especially in the way the franchise seems to have grown up with it’s original fans.
The basic premise of the movie is that Ash and company attend a festival for the Millenium Comet, which only comes to earth once every thousand years. They meet a magician named Butler and his assistant Diane, who have found Jirachi deep in an isolated forest and convince Max to befriend it. However, Butler has dark motives and it’s not long before he is found out and it’s up to Max, Ash and the others to save Jirachi.
The story is actually quite good, considering this is a direct release. This time, Ash takes a back seat to May and Max, and we get to see their characters really develop. The themes of the movie, such as the relationship between brother and sister, and having to say goodbye to friends, are subtle at first, but by the end of the movie you realize they’ve been around all the time. We even get some foreshadowing for Season Seven of the tv series… the only thing that disappointed me was the lack of a theme song during the opening credits, but the Pokemon Advanced theme really wouldn’t have fit the action on screen, so it was probably the right decision to exclude it.
One thing I would like to add… this is a film for the older Pokemon fans. Parents would be advised that the movie might be a bit intense for their littlest Poke-fans, especially the creature Butler creates near the end. I’m a college grad, and it creeped even ME out! The accompaning Pikachu short, however, is perfect for all ages.
If I liked the film so much, why only four stars? Well, Miramax and 4Kids have done better with this release than the previous two. There are no color tint errors this time around (ie, Pikachu doesn’t appear green in some scenes) and the production values are quite high. But some of their decisions are still baffling. The movie end credits, the Pikachu short, the music video, even the DVD menus are all presented in widescreen, but the main feature is not. It just doesn’t make sense why they could not present the main feature in widescreen as well. The ending song includes Japanese lyrics, the music video is completely Japanese, the director’s message is Japanese, yet there is no Japanese language option for the main feature. It’s just very frustrating and odd. Perhaps they’re planning on releasing special widescreen versions of the films down the road…
At any rate, despite the shortcomings, Pokemon fans will really dig this entry. It definately competes with Pokemon 3 and Pokemon Heroes as the best entry in the series.

Kudos to “Pokemon” for turning out yet another wonderful masterpiece!Like”Pokemon Heroes” and the other “Pokemon” films,JWM has a unique plot,well-rounded characters, and plenty of action, suspense ,comedy and drama! And the scenes are breath-taking and well-animated!

A Goofy Movie is one of my top 5 Disney animated movies of all time. Hands down. It’s almost never mentioned by uppity film critics, a lot of people that like Disney usually forget it, and it isn’t exactly a masterpiece like Snow White, but it definately holds its own. I watched it back when it came out, and I loved it. Remembering this, I saw it sitting on a shelf at the store and decided to give it another shot to see if it stood the test of time and my being 20 now. It did. If anything, it only got better. Before The Incredibles, there was another Disney film that brought families close together. And that, was A Goofy Movie, believe it or not. Go ahead and laugh, because I wouldn’t believe it if someone told me that too. Goofy, bringing families closer together? Blasphemy! But it’s not. Goofy is a great character for this kind of movie about a teenager growing distant from his dad. While it’s a good one for families, it’s even better if you’re a single dad with a son. While I’m a month late in saying this, it’s also a very good Father’s Day movie if you two can sit back and enjoy “just” a cartoon.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Goofy Movie! Click Here

We start out with Max, Goofy’s son. He’s dreaming about a girl he has a crush on, Roxanne. It’s ruined before they kiss, when he starts to turn into his dad. Huge teeth, feet, hands, ears, everything. He wakes up, and panics once more- he’s overslept and he’s almost late for a little surprise at school. His dad busts in and embarasses him already, showing up with a towel wrapped around his body and one on his head too while Max is getting dressed. Not a good start for the last day of school. Max makes it and gets together with PJ and Bobby (a new character voiced by Pauly Shore. He acts just like him too). They throw together a huge stage performance where Max imitates Powerline, a pop star in the Goof world, and everyone in the school goes nuts. It comes to a halt when the principal interrupts, and the three friends get into big trouble. Unfortunately, he calls each of their parents at a bad time- Pete (PJ’s dad) is giving Goofy a speech about how Max could join a gang or get into even worse trouble if Goofy doesn’t start being a little harder on him. Goofy takes the call from the principal as a little wake up call, and makes plans to go on a trip to a fishing spot he and his dad went on ages ago. Well, Max had impressed Roxanne with that onstage risk, and they were going to go to an after-grad party together. The trip gets in the way, and he lies to her, saying he’s going to see Powerline live since he knows him. Goofy and Max hit the road to what Goofy thinks is a fun fishing trip and time to bond with his son, but it’s anything but. The two argue, stop talking to eachother for a period of time, get into huge danger in the woods and in a river, and more. I’m sure every parent with a teenager can relate to most of what goes on here.

Now, even just barely out of my teenage years, this movie really hits me. How Max treats his dad from time to time made me resent him, but also made me realize that we’ve all done something like that. Leaving in the middle of what’s supposed to be a fun place because you think it’s dumb…you can see the pain on Goofy’s face when Max does this. And what makes it hurt the viewer is that it’s Goofy- a character who’s always upbeat and happy. Watching him get sad actually made me tear up. What’s worse is when he and Max run into a mishap involving a waterfall. Eventhough I know how it’s going to end, I wanted Goofy to be alright. See? This is just an animated character. But you get attatched to him after all he goes through. But now I’m making the movie sound depressing. Aside from a few moments like the ones I’ve mentioned, the movie’s funny overall, and kids age 11+ will be sure to get a few laughs out of it. Bigfoot discovering disco music has to be one of these things.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Goofy Movie! Click Here

The visual quality didn’t get the best treatment here, but I’m hoping a Platinum Edition is in the works somewhere down the line. There’s notable grain and smudges one the print, and it looks like a slightly cleaned up vhs version. But the movie was made in the mid-late 90’s, so it still looks pretty good animation-wise. No jagged lines here. And the audio’s nice and loud. The Powerline songs at the beginning and end are booming all over the place. Some sound effects are a tad quiet, like Goofy and Max stay at the underwater-themed hotel, but it’s nothing you’ll mind unless you’re listening for things like this.

Here’s the reason it gets four stars instead of five. While I was surprised when I went to the special features menu, and discovered some that were actually good, there weren’t enough. I remember seeing some concept designs for Big Foot and a few other characters way back when, and it would’ve been nice to have had them here in some sort of gallery. Also, it would’ve been nice if Disney had given it as equally great extras as some other Gold Classic Classic discs. But what’s here’s still good. The first one I have to mention is an entire episode of the classic Disney Afternoon cartoon: Goof Troop. It’s the “Calling All Goofs” episode in which a few of Goofy’s relatives are having a reunion. Because Pete screws up Goofy’s car, he can’t go. So instead, Peg (Pete’s sultry wife) has the reunion at their house. Of course, we all know how Pete is around Goofy. How will he handle more than one at the same time? It’s pure chaos. Unfortunately, the transfer to dvd wasn’t kind to the episode, and there are a lot of visual problems here and there (some images jump around instead of smoothly moving. Keep focused on a character when they’re doing something, and you’ll notice it). It’s a funny episode still, and I was surprised to be laughing at it well over ten years after it first aired. It was nice seeing the whole crew, sans Chainsaw. Next, is the biggest extra of the batch- A Goofy Success Story, running over 40 minutes. It covers how Goofy became a household name. It goes well into his past, and is a must-see for classic Disney fans and animation fans in general. After this is the embarassing A Goofy Movie dvd Storybook. If you remember those books on tape…with books included of Disney movies from the 90’s, that’s what this is…only you watch it. There’s the option of having it read to you, in which the narrator sounds like he’s talking to kids with ADD. This is actually worth a laugh, if only for what pictures they chose for each page. The first 3 had me holding my sides (go ahead an’ say I’m immature. I don’t care). What’s almost as bad is the Disney Mambo No. 5 by Lou Bega. It’s Mambo No. 5…but with some changes for a family audience and a Disney theme. What’s somewhat sick is that he goes over pairings for characters. Like Mickey = Minnie, Donald = Daisy. But then he gets to Pluto, who in turn gets Huey, Louie and Dewy. Horrid. There’s also a lame trivia game and the usual trailer to round things out.

That’s all there is to it. Get A Goofy Movie. Don’t even rent it, just buy it. We’re never going to get another one like this. Not from Disney anyway at the rate they’re going.

I watched “A Goofy Movie” tonight when I was babysitting. The kids loved it and I enjoyed it too. This movie contains enough of the little things to be appealing to children of all ages…including teens…like me. I don’t think I’ve seen a better Disney movie. This one has to be my faveorite. The music was good for people of all ages and I have been searching the internet for the soundtrack. It’s not every day that you see a teenager rave about PG movie. Excellent Job Disney!

422 – The Apple Corps: Ash and company come across a woman trying to deal with a pack of Pichu stealing her apples!

423 – Houndoom’s Special Delivery: Togepi is separated from Misty during a freak Teleport accident, but luckly a passing Houndoom takes care of the young Pokemon.

424 – The Tower Inferno!: Ash finally arrives at Ecrutek City, but finds it’s Gym on fire!

425 – From Ghost to Ghost: Ash battles Morty for his fourth badge, but Morty’s ghost Pokemon are almost unbeatable!

426 – Brewing Up Trouble: The kids attend an ancient tea ceremony, where Brock falls in love with four sisters and Team Rocket attempts to steal an Eevee.

427 – All That Glitters: A gang of Murkrow steals Ash’s badges!

428 – The Light Fantastic: A mysterious light emerges over the desert.

These are some pretty interesting episodes and out of them, only one or two feel like fillers. The Apple Corps is a cute episodes, and Brock falling for four different sisters in the same episode in Brewing Up Trouble is hilarious. The two Gym episodes will more than satistfy hardcore battle fans.

I have to be honest – this movie and resulting series both have an important hold on my memories of growing up and discovering what was going to make me laugh in watching TV. I also love BD and what it has done for our industry, so I went into this release with great expectations, and really, I was not disappointed (though it could always be better). If you already have the special edition that Altman cleaned up, this appears to be an identical transfer with no significant changes.

The picture looks great compared to the original releases as most of the artifact has been removed and the color has been saturated extensively – but in a good way. There is an apparent softness throughout, but compared to what the original product was, I don’t mind. The DTS was not the greatest, and the front three channels get all the work. I even tried the football game and some jeep scenes but nothing gets around to the rear channels much. The supplements are identical to the special edition release (roughly 5 hours of docus and extras on all the other DVD sets) with a couple exceptions here:

* Still Gallery – 70 pics that had to be taken from the BD transfer as they are very crisp. Screen saver worthy.

* Complete Interactive Guide: A fun tally on all things done by the characters. When activated, a headshot pic pops up while that person is on screen and a cumulative number appears referencing how many drinks or fights partaken, and/or court martials that should be happening. When there are large volumes of people on the screen the shots take up the whole top and bottom half of the set, but it helps keep track of who enters and leaves each scene. Worth doing once you have watched the film and have time to kill. Customers walking by the screening actually liked this option as it is a nice review of the supporting actors.

There are subs in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin and Thai. Dubbed in Spanish and French with an English 2.0 option. A Portguese trailer was thrown in for good measure. Overall, the picture turned out nice and the sound better than before, and this would be a nice upgrade if you did not already get the other set. I noticed much more grain on a larger display but the smaller LCD panels showcased a solid preservation. Hope you enjoy.

I’ve been a fan of MASH (the movie, not the TV show) since I first saw it at about age 14 or 15 on DVD. Recently, I’ve been getting into the rest of Altman’s movies, so when I saw the blu ray I knew I had to check it out. If you haven’t seen it yet, MASH is a bit of a (pardon me) mash up of a war movie, medical drama, and Animal House. Okay, it’s really just a lot like Animal House. Some reviews I’ve seen online have pegged this movie as being sexist and outdated, but the film is really about the attitudes of a bunch of really talented and really bored twenty something male doctors BS-ing and causing trouble. Unlike the most of Altman’s other work, this is very much a guy movie. I used to think this movie was just effortlessly brilliant and an easy going good time with a bunch of funny actors just doing whatever they felt like. On subsequent viewing after all these years, I can see just how much Altman’s distinctive style had already taken shape in his first film. The scene towards the ends of the movie in long shot with Hawkeye getting news from Radar is absolutely astonishing in how much it conveys with no words at all. Even though I still remembered all the jokes and cringed at the awkwardness of some of the characters, I still found myself laughing out loud at some of the more subtle moments.

Of course, these little bits might have gone unnoticed had I not sprung for the HD version. Again, other reviews on the films picture quality range from decent to miserable and the real result is somewhere in between. Immediately after watching the disc, I popped in the old THX mastered DVD, upconverted by my blu ray player. I’ll admit I was a bit surprised. The major problem with the blu ray is an excessive amount of blooming on any scenes with white clothing. They give off a glow a few centimeters out from the characters. I first thought this was haloing, but no, they were just really bright in comparison with the dark backgrounds. On the DVD, this effect was a lot less noticeable, but everything else picture-wise was worse. For one, the image was a lot darker, smudging out a lot of fine detail. The rest was lost in the digital noise and non-film related pixelated graininess. However, in stripping away the murk on the blu ray, it revealed Altman’s almost vaseline-like filter on the camera and color timing intended to accentuate the drab military greens.

The first thing I looked for on the blu ray was just how much grain they did or didn’t leave on the image. Thankfully, they left most of it in, but it does get a little overwhelming at times, with it seeming to snow over background scenery. There’s a lot more surface detail on fabrics and the stubble on the actors’ faces stands out a bit more. There’s a scene near the beginning of the movie with nurses looking into a tent giggling that was less apparent on DVD, since it was so quick and more difficult to read facial expressions. I’m once again going to repeat the mantra of almost every reviewer covering HD movies from the 70’s – this is probably the best this movie is going to look. The main reason I bought this was just to see what 70s Altman movie can look like in high definition. I assure you that now I’m going to hold out for the HD version of Nashville, instead of buying the DVD.

As far as sound goes… well, I honestly couldn’t tell you if it was an improvement or not. I don’t have a surround sound system to really put the track to test, but I don’t think there can be that much of an improvement over the 5.1 mix on the original DVD. I do think I could follow the rapid overlapping better than I used to, but that probably just comes from repeated viewing, rather than a real technical achievement. All of the extras were ported over from the previous disc, which is good, since it was a fairly packed two disc set. However, there’s no real new stuff to be had. Overall, I’m really just jonesing to see how McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Brewster McCloud, and Nashville hold up on the format. It may not look perfect, or even that good, but this disc shows just what a little TLC can do towards making great murky-looking 70s films watchable on HD sets.

A beautiful documentary and one that I had to have on DVD after I saw it on the Discovery Channel.

It gives you a little background, but in the majority of the 100 minutes you follow several people such as a young gymanst, a window washer in Shanghai hoping to find fortune, a family who still works in the rice fields, a young martial artist, a policewoman in the Gansu province, and several others.

You are able to follow them and understand their way of life in this fascinating country. It is interesting and yet almost sad at how technology and the future is hurting some of the ancient traditions and ways of life in China.

My only complaint is that in the middle of the documentary, it gets a little slow, and I would have preferred to hear more about the actual country, but it’s still a fabulous documentary.

The narration is great, music is beautiful, the design and feel of the documentary is fantastic. All in all, I loved it and enjoy watching it very much.

This 100-minute documentary, narrated by James Spader (who plays Alan Shore on “Boston Legal”), explores life in contemporary China, highlighting the opportunities and challenges of life in the world’s most populous nation and fastest growing economy.

You’ll meet a twelve-year-old gymnast hoping to make the Olympic team; a window cleaner in Shanghai who moved there for the economic opportunities, while his wife and child live in the country; a young woman who gets plastic surgery to improve her prospects in the business world; nomads of Inner Mongolia; a wealthy property developer; rice growers; a master of martial arts; a woman who works on the drug squad; and the last of the imperial bowmakers.

I was disappointed that almost nothing was said about how the Chinese government and economy actually work, and I would’ve liked to hear more about the effects and side-effects of the “one child” policy. I like James Spader, but his narration struck me as excessively earnest and dramatic, as did the musical score, especially given the film’s rather bland, “safe” content.

A much better documentary about contemporary China is “China From the Inside.” And an excellent documentary on twentieth-century Chinese history is “China: A Century of Revolution.”

Jungle to Jungle is a modern version of Little Indian Big City. (see my review). Although this film is funnier, better acted(Tim Allen rocks!), and more entertaining, I didn’t feel the boy(Sam Hungington) that played Mimi was born in the jungle at all. Don’t get me wrong, he is a wonderful actor and the girls will love his bod, although he did a great job he didn’t come across on film as believable. In Little Indian Big City the boy was believable. Sam Huntington spoke as well as a Harvard lawyer and jungle boys don’t speak that well since they told us straight out that he couldn’t read.
This film takes place in New York City. Little Indian Big City takes place in Paris. Mimi climbs the Statue of Liberty, pins the neighbors pigeon against the wall, cooks his dad’s friends prize fish and yes, gets the girl.
The weird thing about this film I think: A half naked boy walks down the street in New York and nothin happens to him? Unbelievable.
I liked the film because of Tim Allen and Sam Huntington. Allen is funny and Huntington is, well.. see the film. You will like it.

TIM ALLEN DOES AS USUAL A WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE. THIS IS A GREAT FAMILY MOVIE UNLIKE SOME OF THE SEX AND VIOLENT FILLED MOVIES OF TODAY. IGNORE TH BAD RATINGS SOME CUSTOMERS GIVE THIS MOVIE. IT IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. ITS NICE TO BE ABLE TO WATCH A MOVIE THAT THE ENTIRE FAMILY CAN ENJOY.
